Oppo, I have suddenly been bitten by the 996 turbo bug. I’ve been browsing craigslist and the want is burning strong. The voluptuous hips and the sleek silhouette look irresistible.

From my understanding, the turbos and GT2 did not suffer from the RMS issues and should be pretty solid. I would also get the Strosek wing pictured above and below as well. What say you oppo? Would this be a smart choice in the future?

I think the IMS bearing issues on the 996 and 986 are a bit blown out of proportion, but yes, the 996 Turbo does not have this problem.

They’re getting pretty cheap and since generally many of them have lived pampered lives, there are plenty of reasonably low-mileage examples in good condition, particularly given their age.

Really the only downsides are the crappy 996 interior—which is particularly ugly if you get it in gray—and the expensive parts.

My neighbour has one and it is the loudest idling car in the known universe. I’m tempted to buy a 997 Turbo just so he can feel inadequate and hopefully sell it. Only then will my peaceful mornings return.

In a related note can we all appreciate the 993 turbo?

I’d say they’re about as cheap as they’ll ever be, so you won’t lose money on it. Pretty reliable for the capability you get, but they’re not cheap to service.

That’s good to hear about the IMS issues. I see regular 996s going for less than 20 on craigslist and I get very tempted to start saving up. The only thing is I LOVE the wide hips of the turbo. And the wing just sets the rear off so well.

Yeah, I agree on the interior. I would probably DIY some Alcantara wrapping on some panels with thin foam underneath to give the soft-touch feel.

I’d be changing my name every few weeks if I were to start down that rabbit hole.

Hmm, how bad would you say it is to service if one were to DIY most if not all of the work?

And then you could give him a taste of what it’s like to have your peaceful mornings taken away with your 997 turbo.

Not awful, actually. I mean, basic maintenance like services & brakes are easy. Things like spark plugs, a bit more difficult. The factory procedure has you take the turbos off, but that’s not necessary. Most things beyond that require taking the engine out because access is limited, which also isn’t really hard, just time & space intensive, so it depends how high you can jack the car up.

The thing to watch out for given their age is the cooling hoses & plastic, because that stuff is really brittle and prone to failure, particularly a little coolant outlet atop the engine that will break & blow all the coolant out in a hurry. There’s an upgrade available. I’ve seen a few eat clutches prematurely, and smoked viscous couplings, but I wouldn’t call that common.

that color is amazing on those cars for some reason. it actually doesnt make much sense because I always want a silver 911 and dont even like red but for me a 993 needs to be in that color.

I nearly had a trouser accident when I saw it! The color actually looks even better in the sunlight if that’s believable.

That sounds like all the convincing I need. Okay, it’s settled. I’m saving up for a 996 Turbo starting NOW!

...And a metric socket set, jackstands, jack and torque wrench but Harbor Freight shall have to do for all of those except the torque wrench.
